1. Introduction of Angel and Soldier Statue
Frederick William Ruckstull (1853–1942) was a French-American sculptor known for his delicate classical style and his interpretation of heroic themes. His works often incorporate realism and symbolism, moving the audience with monumentality and emotional power. Ruckstull’s works are mostly public memorial sculptures, especially after the American Civil War, when he created monuments to Confederate soldiers to express respect and comfort for the fallen. The Angel with Soldier sculpture in Salisbury, North Carolina is one of Ruckstull’s masterpieces.
The “Angel and the Wounded Soldier” statue presents a solemn and emotional scene. Made of bronze, the Angel with Soldier shows an angel gently supporting a wounded soldier, who has his left hand on his chest, with an expression of pain and fatigue, symbolizing the pain he suffered in battle. The angel has a serene demeanor and holds a wreath in her right hand, symbolizing the honor and reverence for the soldier’s sacrifice. Her wide wings are spread out, as if giving the soldier divine protection. The angels’ robes and warriors’ uniforms are meticulously detailed with folds and textures.
